Investment Scams and Fake Trading Platforms: What You Need to Know

Learn how to identify fraudulent investment sites, verify FCA authorisation, and take safer next steps after suspected investment fraud.

Fake trading platforms can mimic legitimate investment services, displaying charts, balances, and apparent returns that may not reflect a real investment. Verify the firm and the website independently before depositing or transferring money.

How Fake Trading Platforms Work

The fraud typically begins with a social media advertisement or an unsolicited message promising exceptional investment returns in forex, cryptocurrency, commodities, or stocks. The victim is directed to a professional-looking website and encouraged to make a small initial deposit, which appears to generate immediate profits on the platform's dashboard.

Encouraged by these apparent gains, the victim invests more. When they eventually try to withdraw, they are told they must pay a "tax," "compliance fee," or "withdrawal fee" first. These fees are also stolen. Eventually, the platform disappears entirely.

Domain ageRecently registered domains are a major red flag

Clone Firm Fraud

A particularly dangerous variant involves cloning a real, FCA-authorised firm. The fraudsters use the genuine firm's name, registration number, and even copy their website. They then cold-call investors and direct them to a fake website that looks identical to the real firm's site. Always access investment platforms by typing the address directly — never via a link in an email or message.

Recovering from Investment Fraud

Contact your bank promptly and report suspected investment fraud to the FCA and through Report Fraud. APP reimbursement protections have conditions and exceptions, so check current official guidance. Be wary of recovery scams that ask for an upfront fee to recover your money.
